Jesus and the Widow of Nain (“I Say Unto Thee, Arise”)

And it came to pass the day after, that he went into a city
called Nain; and many of his disciples went with him,
and much people.
Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold,
there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his
mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the
city was with her.
And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her,
and said unto her, weep not.
And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare
him stood still. And he said, Young man, I SAY UNTO
THEE, ARISE.
And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he
delivered him to his mother.
And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God,
saying, that a great prophet is risen up among us; and,
That God hath visited his people.
Luke 7:11-16

1. Jesus has great compassion on the sorrowful and
tragic circumstances of people’s lives. That is why He
was moved by this widow’s plight as she buried her
only son.
Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold,
there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his
mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the
city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, HE HAD
COMPASSION ON HER, and said unto her, weep not.
Luke 7:12-13

2. Jesus is able to raise the dead even when they are on
the way to the cemetery for burial.
Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold,
there was A DEAD MAN CARRIED OUT, the only son
of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of
the city was with her.
Luke 7:12

3. Jesus is saying to you, “Arise from your sins and
difficulties!”
And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him
stood still. And he said, Young man, I SAY UNTO THEE,
ARISE.
Luke 7:14

4. Through the power of God, fear comes on people and
they respect the power of God. This is why miracles
and healing are important today.
And there came A FEAR ON ALL: and they glorified God,
saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and,
That God hath visited his people.
Luke 7:16

5. The miracle healing of the widow of Nain’s son
demonstrates the love of God, the compassion of Jesus
Christ, the greatness of Jesus Christ and the power of
the Holy Spirit.
… For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he
might destroy the works of the devil.
1 John 3:8
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten
Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish,
but have everlasting life.
John 3:16

6. Jesus raised three people from the dead: Jairus’
daughter, the widow of Nain’s son and Lazarus.
Every time Jesus raised somebody from the dead, He
demonstrated the greatest kind of power because the
raising of the dead is three miracles in one:
i. The first miracle was the calling of the spirit of the widow
of Nain’s son from heaven or hell.
ii. The second miracle was the restoration of a decomposed
body to normalcy.
iii. The third miracle was the healing of the body of the widow
of Nain’s son of the disease from which he died. If he
were not healed of the disease he died from, he would have
immediately died again when his spirit returned to his body.

7. Today, Jesus is telling you to rise out of your sins by
receiving the Blood of Jesus and being born again.
