HOW TO BE WISE AS A SERPENT

I had the great privilege of sharing this Sunday, in my good friend Bishop Mosa’s church, Grace Bible Church. It has been a great journey we have been on for the past thirty years and I am truly blessed and grateful to have such a friend.

“Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.” – Matthew 10:16

This is an instruction from Jesus telling us to be harmless as doves and wise as serpents. Why did Jesus not say be wise as lions or tigers? Serpents are one of the most successful animals in the world. They have been able to survive from generation to generation and flourish. Yet, there is no animal that is hated more than a snake. In spite of this hatred, snakes have flourished! You will flourish because you are receiving the wisdom of a serpent. Human beings tend to have proper respect for snakes. This is because we know how dangerous they are! When you are wise as a serpent, people will have the proper respect for you.

There are several attributes that make snakes prosperous. The first one is that, snakes  are masters of radical change! Snakes have the ability to shed their skin and present a new one. When they shed their skins, they have the ability to become shinier, faster, eat more and better. Many Christians lack the ability to adapt to change. When God asks us to let go of our old ways, we fight Him. It is because of this that we never move and go. Learn to adapt like a snake. I see you becoming shinier and more radical for God. Learn to shed your old skin and take on a new one.

Taking on the wisdom of a serpent does not include taking on the character of one! Snakes cannot be led. How many have seen a crowd of anacondas being led? However, sheep can be led to the correct path. When you are led, you shall lack nothing (Psalm 23:1). Learn to receive the wisdom of a serpent and the character of a lamb.

Blessings!
