As we enter this new year, we enter into a season of prayer and fasting. During this time, it is important that we pray about the will of God concerning our lives. The Bible says “Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself” (Ephesians 1:9).
God’s will is mysterious. A mystery is something you do not completely understand or see. That is why when we say something like the mystery of the missing car, it begs the question how did the car go missing? Now Ephesians 1:9 says “having made known unto us the MYSTERY of his will”. So, the will of God is also mysterious. It is not something that is easy to see or understand. There are many mysterious things in this world that we do not see but yet accept. We have to seek for the mysterious will of God. There is nothing more mysterious than Jesus dying on the cross. How can it possibly be sensible that such a thing should have happened? When Jesus was in the Garden of Gethsemane, he prayed to God “And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt” (Matthew 26:39). In other words, when you are in human flesh, it is not so easy to know what to do. That is why it is called a mystery, because it is not so obvious what is the right thing to do in your life: who to be with, who to marry, who to be your friend, what will make you prosper. It is mysterious. This is why we must believe that God’s will is mysterious and therefore must be sought.
When you think about it, you do not actually know yourself. How much more then what to do? You do not actually know what is in you or the secrets of your heart. If this is true, how can you even know what is right for you? Nobody would have ever believed that Germany could have possibly killed so many people during Hitler’s reign. Who could have imagined so much evil could come from one region? We do not know how evil we truly are. It is only when it touches us personally do we recognize it as being bad. Would you then trust yourself to make the best decisions for your life? Why not trust in God and His mysterious decisions for your life instead? In 2018, determine to live according to the will of God!
