A Lawyer by profession, with specialization in Legal Draftsmanship,
the tender age of 9 years saw Lady Reverand Adelaide accepting Jesus
Christ as her Lord and personal saviour. It was as early as then
that she sensed the call on her life to be a missionary. In High
School, having renewed her commitment to the Lord, she rose up into
Christian Leadership in pioneering and leading an off-campus Bible
study group. The candid Mrs. Heward-Mills recalls taking up this
challenge still with some unanswered questions.
It was about this time that the First Lady met the then Brother
Dag. Answers to her questions came as she learnt profound biblical
truths through his teachings. The resultant turning point was to
prove the most telling in her life, both spiritually and naturally.
By 1985, the friendship between Sister Adelaide and Brother Dag
had evolved into a courtship. In her words: “Our relationship
was a result of his spiritual uprightness, his courage and boldness
and his powerful yet caring personality.” With her characteristic
smile she adds: “I was also slain by his charm and good looks.”
In sincerity she humbly, yet proudly, acknowledges her husband as
also being her pastor and father in ministry. She reflects on her
simultaneous roles of a pastor’s wife, a mother, a woman in
ministry and a professional, as being made possible only by the Grace
of God. Without hesitation, she attributes the victories in her life
and that of her husband solely to God and the merciful understanding
that battles are won on bent and praying knees. Her ministry emphasis
is therefore on a strong personal relationship with God.
Her gentle yet exacting demeanour makes her a rare and compelling
speaker with an enviable grace to minister to ladies. This call has
resulted in her being responsible for a variety of tailor-made ministries
to women. These include: Women With Direction International; a ministry
for women with vision, Called-By-His-Side; a ministry for Pastors’ wives,
Women of Great Price; a ministry for Lady Pastors, Women in Ministry;
a ministry for women who work full-time for God.
Sister Maame, or Mama, as she is so affectionately called within
the L.C.I. family, is also the hostess and speaker at the ‘Daughter
You Can Make It’ Conventions organized in L.C.I. churches worldwide.
This growing platform is increasingly gaining international recognition
across the globe with its impact going beyond the LCI borders and
beginning to span the wider Body of Christ.
Included in her administrative offices and functions are: Membership
Assistance; job placement for L.C.I. church members, Pastoral Care,
Director of the Lighthouse Christian Nursery School, Legal Affairs
Department, Protocol and Hospitality, Chairperson for various Boards
in the church.
A soft-spoken person by nature, she is also a natural people-person.
One of her great assets is the ability to disarm anyone in her company
of their insecurities and complexes and to allow them to open up
to receive what God has for them.
In spite of all this, she firmly believes that her primary call
is to be the helpmeet to her husband, and she continues endlessly
to seek the grace of God to excel in the discharge of this calling.
